The state of Blockerbuster Video

The ’90s were thriving for the now endangered Blockbuster. The memories of excitement of going to Blockbuster on the weekends and renting several VHS movies and later games, was an awesome experience to me as a young lad.

Fast forward to today, and I can not wait until the final door closes. Why? Blockbuster is no longer needed in this world. Today, we have services like Netflix, GameFly, Redbox, iTunes and more that makes renting and buying media a lot easier, cheaper, and faster.

I’ve sort of got a hate for Blockbuster and have had one since 2004, when they were doing that whole “The End of Late Fees” scam. All it was was and extension of the current due date. I found this out the hard way when I rented Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and kept it for 3 full months. Finally brought it back in after beating it, and they slapped my account with a $90 late fee. I argued that they were advertising the end of late fees, and the bitch (yes, she acted like a bitch) behind the counter told me that there was a late fee policy still in play. She said anything passed 30 days was considered purchased by the customer.

I then told the bitch that the game was $49.99 new and that she had no right to overcharge me $40 more for it. So we went back in forth for a while and at the end of it all I told her I was keeping the game and keeping my money. And to this day, they still have a $90 late fee on my account. Like it matters.

Analysts predict Blockbuster Video will file for bankruptcy in September. I can agree; I saw another store location closing its doors today. The world no longer needs you, Blockbuster. So get the hell out.

And to those who are losing their Blockbuster jobs: I hear Netflix is hiring.

Apple is becoming 1984

As you may know, I am a huge fan of Apple Inc. I am an evangelist for all their products, and use them in my everyday life. And that’s all fine and dandy, but what if I wanted to break the boundaries of what Steve Jobs thinks is best for me? I can, to some extent, but at a price. I could risk messing up my iDevice, and if I wanted Apple to repair it under my AppleCare warranty, they would most likely turn me away. Why? Because it was not approved by The Don to begin with.

What am I talking about? Jailbreaking. You may have heard a few weeks ago, that the Library of Congress made it legal to jailbreak and unlock your iPhones and other iDevices. We immediately saw developers create a website called Jailbreak.me, which would allow you to jailbreak your device using mobile Safari. People were off to the races. Word spread so quick, we even saw people jailbreaking the demos at Apple Store locations.

Apple has devised a new plan to keep you locked in to their way of iOS. They have patented a “kill switch” that would allow them to scan iDevices over networks anonymously and essentially kill the devices in offense. Basically, any unlocked or jailbroken device.

Welcome to 1984. Welcome to what Apple was trying not be in 1984. Welcome to your new IBM overlord.
